What is the best way to make custom columns?

I will be building new columns in just about every house I do - What is the easiest and quickest way to build a column? Thanks Matt

Usually I would take some existing content and make the modification that are needed. Otherwise I would just create something from scratch using the column family template file (found under file>new>family).

What type of columns are you needing right now Matt?

If they are something like round columns in wood or fiberglass or something similar, a solid revolve will usually do the trick. Just draw the profile and axis of rotation and it will generate it for you.

We use sometimes a 4x4 post, wrapped with a framed box with stone on top of that with conc. cap.

Is that done by solid form, solid sweep? The stone is actually really close. It looks to be like I would have to modify the cap a little bit.

Everything is made out of solid extrusion forms except for the base which is a solid blend. As for the modification, the column is yours for the keeping so go nuts changing it around. Once your done, post it if you would like. I would love to see the final results.

Thats awesome and your welcome too! You even applied a couple of different family types to it and I even noticed that you added the trim under the cap. Good fine details I must say.

The only problem I have is how it looks in plan view - Why is it I can not do dashed lines?

You may have to add some symbolic lines to the family.
