View Full Version : Placing Concrete Beams??

Afternoon All,
This maybe straight forward but here goes. Iam playing around with the demo
version. I have drawn a grid layout and structural concrete columns. No
problems.
Iam now trying to draw some concrete structural beams. How on gods green
planet do you get the ends of the beam to snap to something????
I have two types of beam drawn at the moment. Concrete Rectangular and
Precast inverted T. How can I drag the end points of beams to snap
perpendicular or any snap?
Also the rectangular beam on has a dot each end for dragging, where as the
PC inverted T has a dot and some arrows.
Why are they different and how can I get them to snap or position them with
some sort of dimensional accuracy?
Aslo why does the rectangular beam project past wherever I drag the dot?
Any help appreciated.

First check Settings>Snaps and make sure that you have snaps turned on. If that doesn't fix things, make sure that the columns go to the level on which you are drawing the beams. (select column, right click, go to "properties", (NOT view properties) and check the top and bottom constraints.

Go for the circle at the end of the member. That is it's "Member End" If snaps are turned on, you should be able to snap it to grid intersections at a minimum.

The triangles are "Shape Handles" and control the length of the extrusion inside the precast beam family. They only adjust the "visual" representation of the member, not the "physical" length of the member. The "physical" length is controlled by the circles.

Snaps are on and I have set the top of the columns 450mm below the top constraint. Thats the depth of the beams. When I was talking about snapping. I wanted so that my t shape beam coming in at 90degrees to my rectangular beam would snap to the intersection of the gridline and the face of the rectangular beam. Seems I have to draw a reference line and then do it.

If you want to do a test for yourself try this. Draw two concrete columns. Then draw a rectangular beam between them. If you zoom in close the edge of the beam will project 13mm in my case past the centrline of the column. I just tried it now. If you know what this 13mm is and what its for Id like to know.
Thanks for your reply when I get some time I have to start going through the tutorials.
