Reference in a standard component family

I've heard that you have to try to restrict the amount of in place families and create standard components families instead. In place families give you the ability to have an outline or a reference to place, model and shape the component. You don't have this reference in a standard component family. How do you solve this?

Paste the geometry from an in-place family into a family template.

You can also export an appropriate view from the model and then imporrt it into the family editor to use it as a guide.
