Placing Callouts

Is it possible to make any shape other than a square? I've got some areas that need to be "L" shaped.

An "L" shape is not possible at present with a single callout. A circle is possible when the corner fillet is defined large enough.

Definitely a wish list item, but does anyone have a workaround for the current capabilities? I thought maybe multiple callouts that are aligned when the view is placed on a sheet, but views cannot be aligned like that.
The only other option I know of is a default rectangular callout and a strategically placed solid white filled region to mask what we don't want to see. Yes, the callout boundary itself is out of place, but at least the larger scale detail is "clean".

You are right do it with solid fills but you can change individual lines in the fill to be different types so the side that need to look like part of the call out you could have as dashed lines (or what ever) and the rest as invisible.
