Const Phase Question

I am laying out an existing building for a future addition. When I place walls, doors, etc. into the drawing, the go in as"new construction". How do I place them into the drawing as "existing construction" phase? I know how to change them to existing AFTER they have already been placed via the element properties window.

Change the phase of the current view, under view properties. New walls will inherit the phase of the current view.
