What family do you put a fireplace under... I am having trouble getting them to show up correctly because my intuition is to put them on Generic Model Wall Based or Specialty Equipment but neither of those categories allow you to turn off the projection of the lines if they are not near the cut plane. Therefore I see the firebox on the second floor.

Are you sure your view range is set correctly? Sounds to me like you might have the View Depth set too "deep". Have you checked if your underlay is turned on? That would cause the level below to show up.

I typically build my fireplaces as inplace wall families when they are standalone single features. If you are talking about a fireplace insert, then I use the specialty equipment family.
