I have found that if I am looking to do some fancy with some inplace structural object I can use the visibility option to loft a couple of different profiles in on a couple of different paths.
This way I can array them with other structural bits attached to them and if I want to change over the structure I can do so by editing the family and turning the profile that I want on.
The big advantage to doing it this way rather than seperate family type is that if you are arraying groups you can get some issues with not being able to swap family types in and out withing groups, which means that you have to detach the object from the group and attach a new one back in.
