View Full Version : Standard Details - How to link or xref?

I want to create a set of standard details. These will not be section cuts of the model because they will be generic and reusable details to be used again for other projects.
I could have these details in drafting views all in the master project file, but this is unmanageable. I am looking for a way to keep each detail as its own file and have them linked into the project, so they can be coordinated by Revits project browser.
I can achieve this by having my details as seperate autocad DWG files and linking them, but the option to link in a revit RVT is greyed out beacuse my detail is not a model its a drafting view. I could cut and paste but this would break the link and defeat the purpose.
Unsure of what the revit equivalent of the autocad XREF command is. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Currently the best approach is to maintain "detail projects" these are revit files with like details in drafting views, ie, toilet details, stair details, walls, windows, etc. Then open these files along with your current project when you get to detailing and copy paste as needed.

Thanks for the response, although I'm surprised there is no xref equivalent in Revit. I'm glad I opted for "Revit Series" so I still have autocad. Revit Import Link DWG seems to be the best option.

How about grouping the standard details and just load it for every project that needs it is this not recommended? I also want to know the best practice how to manage this type of process thank you.

I think if you have alot of standard details, this would make the template file pretty large.

How about just putting the detail group in the library and not loaded in the template file I think it should be ok right?

You mean like make a detail component family of an entire standard detail?
That would work for details that you are SURE you'll never need to edit or change. Otherwise it could get to be a real pain having to go into the family and edit it and re-save it each time you needed to change or update something.

Hey
Just to let you know I have been using the detail component for all the standard details and it work like a dream.
Cut the section and do a call out, place the detail component and there you have a detail section.
Is this best practice?
