View Full Version : Arched Opening in curved wall
How can we make or insert an arched opining in a curved Wall? I have no problem in a straight wall but when I tried in a curved wall, could not do it. I tried inserting an arch, creating an opening, editing the family, read the help file but nothing.
Please can someone help me.
Jules.

2 ways, First great a generic model - wall based family. Make the opening the shape you want.
2nd way- in place void , create a ref. plane where you want the opening, then make an elevation view using that ref/ plane and create the void. If you want a perfect opening you can use a void blend, but typically an extrusion does just fine.
I usually use the first option because you usually have more than one opening.

use the void, being sure that the depth of the void will take into consideration the curve of the wall. Note that this will not be a 90 degree cut on the wall (because of the arch effect - don't think it will - I'll try it later). Also, voids do not wrap the finish to the opening.
Thank you. If I understand what your saying is; I will make the generic wall and then insert a void in it, I tried that and the void arch do not cover the wall as the dimension I need, it cover just part of the wall. I've included the design I'm talking about. There is 2 off the set of wall on the first floor, the reason is that the one that are attached to the ceiling cannot be seen in the first floor view. I've insert the set of wall so you can see the exact dimension of the wall
Sorry for the typo, English is my second language.

Use a family, see attached.
Thank you sbrown for the file, I've downloaded and have a good look at it to see how it was created.
I've created a family for the wall and opening I need, when I view it on 3D, it looks exactly the way I want it but when I load it into a project, it looks completely different. Can you have a look at it and let me know what I've done wrong. If you don't mind and it's not to much to ask, can you write down the steps I need to make in order to correct it as I'm new to Revit and I would like to learn it in a good way, it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

I'm sorry I don't have time this morning. but for the steps, its very simple.
1. File>new family> generic wall hosted
2. Create ref. planes to define your opening width in plan
3. Create ref. planes to define your spring ht
4. create the opening(use the opening tool)
5. add a radius parameter to the arch sketch line(look at my family in the project)
Load into project and place in plan on your walls.
Tip. I find it easies to change the walls base offset down to the ground, then move it up after I place the arch family.
Thank you sbrown for the information. I tried the one you send me and it is working, all I had to do is modify it in order to fit perfectly to the wall I have in my Log House kitchen.
Regards
Jules
