Topography, pads and design options

Been reading thru some old threads on adding a topo surface to design options but didn't see a resolution to any of the questions. This is mostly for remodeling for me. How does one add a pad for an addition and not see it in the main model when that design option is not visible? I would think that someone has run into this and either got it to work or not to work. Any help would be most appreciated.
