Custom Window Assembly / Modifier

Hey all,

Am at my wits end trying to create a custom window/wall profile. This is for creating as-built documentation. We have a masonry building that has a wall thickness of 16", the interior opening is 4 feet wide. The exterior opening is 3' 6". The window itself is 3' 2". Creating the double hung window at 3' 2" with a 5" frame on either side is not the problem it is having ADT cut the wall correctly on the outside, for it to cut it at 3'6 outside and 4' inside.

Is there a way to create anything that would allow me to do this? I understand I could create a modifier for the wall and then drop the window into the modifier, but am hoping to get it to be more of a one step process, that is, create a custom assembly and drop it in since this type of assembly is repeated endlessly throughout the floors.

Try running a search in the ADT forums for creating wall endcaps/opening endcaps. You'll need to make some custom ones.

Okay I've been playing with this in ADT for awhile and I think I got it, so I typed it and post it here in case it will help anyone going forward. I know for us, as we do a lot of existing conditions, creating these custom profiles before we start 'building" will save us a lot of drafting time.

Create Custom Window
Select Window / Right Click / Copy Window Assign Style – “Give window new name, default will just append (2), For example ‘Double Hung (2)

To create custom opening/endcap for windows

Select Style Manager from Menu / Expand ‘Wall Opening EndCap Styles’ / Create “New Style” / Name New Style – choose name, for example “Style 1”

Go back to Model
Select Window, In Properties Window, expand ‘Location’ Tab in Properties/ Window Endcaps selection / Choose New Style / “Style 1”

Draw polylines counter clockwise on wall to define your new endcap, drawing on current wall and on window helps you draw a new accurate profile. Draw two separate 2-D polylines on each side of window.

Select Wall- Right Click- / Choose EndcapsCalculate Automatically / Select polylines for new profile / Hit return and ADT will ask if you want to delete polylines (y/n) / ADT will ask if you want to Modify “Style 1” / Choose “Yes’

You now should have created a new window profile that you can use by choosing it in the properties section, or you can always use the ‘Standard’ opening endcap.
