Un-basing a based family?

Is there a way to change a wall based item to a stand alone item without re-drawing the family?

Have you tried selecting everything except the hosting element and pasting it into a non hosted new family template? If that doesn't work you could try creating a very thin wall type that is the same height/length as the hosted family to be the host. If neither of those work I think you may be stuck recreating content.
