I just saw a user post this 'bug' (http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?threadID=458606)on the adesk groups and wondered if anyone can confirm?

I've found with dynamic blocks is that when you use layermerge, all the objects on the layers being merged or merged to will lose their associations

I did a quick test on on of my DBs and found that running LAYMRG does indeed CHANGE the composition of Dynamic Blocks.

I went back into the block after having run LAYMRG (as discussed in your link) and checked this out to be sure. All the parameters and actions remained IN the DB as originally created, however for some reason, the actions no longer linked to drawing objects. They still linked to their respective parameters, but there appeared to be no connection to any objects within the created block. I started to re-associate my actions with their respective drawing objects and then I'm like: "Forget this" and I closed the drawing without saving. (whew!)

The block is fine and no work was lost.

The change isn't that it explodes or deletes DBs, but rather that it 'dis-associates' drawing objects from their actions. Parameters are not affected. Nor is the link between actions and Parameters. The only thing that changes is the link between Actions and drawing objects (lines, splines, circles, rectangles, etc.)

This raises some concerns regarding the more complex blocks with multiple vis states, parameters and actions. I also found it interesting that there is no mention of LAYMRG command in the Help menu for CAD 2006. At least, none that I could find.

I do not have a workaround or a solution to this other than: Don't run LAYMRG.

Anyone else wanna toss in their $0.02 ?

Layer Merge is an Express Tool. ;) I hope that this bug has not been incorporated into the next release, since the layer tools from the Express Tools is being incorporated.

You know, right after I posted the reply, I figured: "That command might be an Express Tool and I might look like one for not recognizing that" but I figured I'd let it go.

I figured the important part was my findings ..... RIGHT??!?!?!??!

Is there a special help menu section with regards to express tools commands?

It's a separate file. Should be accessible from the ET pull-down.

Is there a special help menu section with regards to express tools commands?I believe in the next release (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=34949&highlight=breaking+info), the layer express tools have been incorporated into base autocad... hmm, I'm going to have to check this out... I read this earlier (it has since been verified on adesk discussion groups by one of their mods), and it worried me since I run LAYMRG ALOT to clean up drawing files... ~chews nails~

thanks for checking this out...

just out of curiosity, i haven't used this command before either, but would like to know what others use it for. Melanie?.......

To clean up drawings
To change layer names
...

Just a guess. I've only used it a few times, not too often though.

does the command affect DB's on modified layers only, or is it a global DB bomb?

does the command affect DB's on modified layers only, or is it a global DB bomb?I would assume that it only affects db's on the layers being merged...
hmm... wonder if it affects items already on that layer? I would assume not, but, I won't know unless I have a chance to try it... ~pondering~

Melanie?.......I use this to clean up drawings... most of what I work with is actually designed by outside contractors... so, this would likely be me pasting in a new part of a building done in a reno, and merging similar layers for compliance or simplifying.
compliance example... merging layers AWA and A-WALL (we use short-format here)
simplification example... merging layers AWA-Ex, AWA-New (by the time I get it, everything is existing)

No it is not global. It only affects the specified DB being merged. I used (in my tests) my "master DB file" this is the spot where every single DB I have is stored. In retrospect, it's not a bright idea ..... anyway. When I ran my tests, the command only affected the DB being merged. Every other layer remained intact. Good thing too, otherwise I might have needed a pair of "Oops, I ******* my pants" (for those who remember SNL)
