View Full Version : Importing a 3d Dxf file

I thought I had a good work around for being able import a Risa model into Revit that wasn't created in Revit, but upon doing so I found out it didn't work.
I exported a 3d dxf file from Risa and imported it into RS. Now I want to add beams using the stick figure model that I have. The problem comes up that I can't exploded the .dxf file, or snap to the end points. Has anyone tried anything like this yet? It'd be really nice to be able to import a 3d dxf file and draw over the top of it. On other note, this method works great in ADT. But when you bring in an ADT model, do a partial explode, you just get garbage, so that didn't work either. But I was able to create a small complex model in ADT real quick.
Any info would be great.
Thanks in advance

Wow. I should have searched before posting because I just asked the same exact question. I assume my thread will be merged with this. Hopefully there's an answer out there...?

I guess the most basic question is I don't understand why structural elements (beams, columns, etc) seem to ignore lines. I'm obviously missing something fundamental here.

Guys - I too would like to a simpler way to import and 'pick' lines from a dxf - but in the meantime.... try starting a new 'mass' family (no license at home so not sure if that's right), import the dxf into the family then save as, load the family into the project and I think it will shows up correctly - then you at least have a method of picking lines for reference planes? and so a way of placing the structural members ?
Not easy - have only done it on basic test files - and guess if you have curves it'll be pretty awkward - but still, thats the only way I know so far...any other takers??
have fun ;-)
