I need to redefine a dynamic block, but when i try using the block=path+block.dwg method, i get an error message saying the block references itself.
I have used this block a lot i wouldn't want to have to re-insert every instance.
Does the dynamic block you are inserting a block within the inserted drawing? This usually causes this error.

Yes that is the problem, to get rid of it i have to delete all the blocks, purge them and re-insert. not ideal with over 1500 blocks in the drawing.
How can Autodesk not have envisaged the need to redefine dynamic blocks? This is a half baked addition to AutoCAD, rushed out to make them look good.

No. It's not that, it's just that it's a first generation tool.
There's bound to be some bugs that need fixing. Even we, in the architectural & construction fields, require a second set of eyes to get rid of all errors on plan. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, some errors get through all the testing and double and triple checking we do.
I am sure that these issues will get resolved in the next release or two, once they've found all the ways we're able to contort DBs to do our bidding.
In the meantime, don't let your frustration turn you off a great tool with tons of potential.
