I keep hearing this word, loft... it's evidently something cool?

3d lofter is used to convert from 2d to 3d objects
i was familar with this long time before when i was using 3dstudio 4 under Dos. it had 5 modules: 2d shaper ,3d lofter ,3d editor , material editor & Animator

From this post ( Breaking info on AutoCAD 2007 ), you might like to review the below links ( all talk about "Loft" )...

If a loft is a software/hardware thing... see posts above.
Here a loft is a place to live. Created from old factory buildings... Usually 1 floor per loft (very big room in square meters) where everthing is located.
Very cool and trendy here. (and very expensive)

I found this online:
Loft-A modeling tool that creates surfaces from a series of profile curves.
LOFT
A command which creates a 3d polygon object by connecting a series of splines or lines with a "skin" of polygons.

That's probably the best definition I think I've heard yet! I did this model with lofts only.

Wow... nice definition. Thanks, Ed.
very neat looking pic, cwentworth!

A challenge hmmm? Try this PDF: http://www.excitech.co.uk/news/2007/autocad_2007.asp
Read about 1/2 way down, it gives a decent picture of lofting along with a variety of other new features in this version.

Does Autocad have loft functionality yet? I used too model in AutoCAD but went to a solid modeler when I realized I could do more complex shapes with lofting. It broke my heart too, because I love AutoCAD. Attached are some models I've drawn in straight AutoCAD. If they have added lofting I might switch back!

geez, you can already get about 18000 google hits on acad 2007 lofts (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-11,GGLJ:en&q=autocad+2007+lofts).
those are cool pics, too. :)

Thanks,
I'm a CAD geek of the first order. I get all excited when someone says "Draw this!"
hahahahahaha LOL

That's cool, I know how you feel I do that more than I would like as well! Why can't people just leave us alone to DRAW!

erm... you misunderstand... I'd rather troubleshoot than draw. ;) ~shrug~ not that I do much drawing anyway.

Hehehe Then I think you are likely in the wrong profession then, the one I'm in now should be much more to your liking. ;-) Perhaps someday?
(Will stop before this becomes CWC....)
lofting is pretty much the same as extrusion, on a open path, but its a 3d mesh, instead of a 3d solid.
X,Y fit will be more interesting in the new version, as you will be able to make interesting shapes like aircraft wings, or boat hulls.

Lofting is something that us 3D modelers have been waiting for! One profile extruded to another.
Try this Draw 3 shapes a rectangle, a circle, and a triangle. Place them say 10 units above each other in the z axis. Now use the loft command and pick them in order. The square will extrude to the circle and then to the triangle. So you can do all kinds of cool things.
However, when you get to complex objects, it starts getting tricky. I think the addition of this command is an awesome plus, but it is still pretty clunky to use.

whoa. that would be an impossible nightmare to try to do in one of the previous versions. neat-o.

One (contrived) word - 3DStudio.
It's nice to get it finally in acad too.
