vertical dim between 2 angled lines

can you place a dim that is vertical to angled lines? when itry i get a strait dim between them. i am needing to place head clearance dim on my stairs but can't get tha right dim string. in microstaion it is called an arbitrary dim. i have attached a sketch of my problemk incase i didn't do good job of explaining.

A: Dimension the line you have drawn...
B: If the line is there only for explanation - draw a few more ref planes...one vertical connetcing the two lines like the line you drew. Then one at each intersection. Dimension between the two at the intersections.
