Disappearing Pattern File

From time to time I encounter various Revit Systems that seem to loose there association with there pattern file libraries
When you go edit a Surface or Cut Pattern of a slab or wall family, instead of previews of the relevant pattern you simply get a X in-place of an image of the pattern file.
Often saving your drawing and restarting Revit does correct this issue, however not always......
