Lighting for niches

I have made niches in the wall by using void extrusion and then cutting it into the wall. But when i try to place a light in it as a niche spotlight, it does not function properly till it is inside the niche. only when i move it out of the niche the light renders properly. Is there something i am doing wrong? Please help.

try putting a small ceiling into the top of the niche, then place light in the ceiling

or create a non ceiling based fixture.
