Not sure if this would be the correct place to put this but here goes. I am looking for a street map/drawing of Illinois/St. Louis metro area. On my personal time I am a volunteer firefighter and would like to update some of the current street guides they have. I have tried the GIS route and they cost more than what the department or I could afford. What I would really like is a property boundaries along with the street map but would be willing to deal with just the street map. I also would like the map to be as accurate as possible and would like to be able to edit it as well. If anyone can help, or direct me to where I can obtain some information, I would greatly appreciate it. --Chris

chris, just my thought (meaning I'm likely wrong), but, anything with property lines would be controlled by the counties that the property resides in, and many of them are probably not available electronically, esp not in cad format. the only drawings I have showing property lines were done by the city of st. louis (I realize you're asking for outside of those areas), and I doubt the smaller locales would be as up-to-date as the cities.

just thinking of the time I had to find property maps of my mom's place over in troy, and they had to go to edwardsville and pull through some old paper files that were quite a mish-mash of handwritten notes and official surveys.

Have you spoken with the city engineer's office in your town? They may have something that would help. Or possibly a Council of Governments organization that may have GIS information.

Another source may be the assessor's office/tax department of the areas you are interested in. They are generally up to date (for obvious reasons), and many are using GIS solutions. Many types of GIS data (SIC?) are convertible to CAD format if you can get your hands on it.

Due to the fact I am from a small town (South Roxana), the city has very little. I have talked to the county and that's where they wanted to charge me more than what I or the department will pay.

I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet in the long run and purchase what they are asking for. I just thought I would try and see if someone had something on cad already that I could use. I appreciate all the replies. Still let me know if anyone comes across anything that can help out. Thanks.

Where they wanting to charge you or the department? Could the city help in getting the resources needed for your department?

Another thought: have you tried Google Map?

Does the county have 911? If so, have you contacted them?

They were going to charge the city and/or me. It didn't matter to them. I like the idea of trying to contact the 911. I'll have to give that a try.

You may be able to get a hard copy of the roads from your state DOT (http://www.dot.state.il.us/). I'm not familiar with the area. My DOT produces a parish (county) road map that contains alot of road information.

Please note I have *moved* this thread from the AutoCAD General (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=120) forum to this one...

Why? - Hopefully a Map 3D or GIS user will be able to offer some assistance with your request.

Thanks, Mike

Chris,

Not sure what your budget range is but here are few possibilities.
County Roads or Public Works, County Emergency Management (911), State DOT and when all else fails you can purchase USGS Quadrangles some areas are digital files others raster images. I had to purchase a product called RealTopo to get my images several years ago.
