I am going through the tutorial "Creating your first building project".
When I go to open the file, Revit has created many files.
I called this one:
Eric West Wing.rvt

When I look for it I find:
Eric West Wing.rvt
Eric West Wing.0001.rvt
Eric West Wing.0002.rvt

They are all different file sizes as well.

What are these additional files?

Does Revit do this for all projects? If so that can get quite confusing and "eat up" disk space as well.

Thanks for any info.

The *.rvt file is your main, active model.
The files with the numerical suffix are backup files.
You can set the number of backup files in your options to as low as 1.
Revit does this for all projects, you have to become familiar with Revit's output and simply manage it.
During the course of a design development/documentation, I will parse extraneous files. Also, I sometimes take snapshots of milestones, and save those, but only when warranted. Finally, once a project is completed, I will audit the directory and save only the info I need. Otherwise you're going to eat up allot of disk space/dvd's.
