Why are some (structural beams) joists yellow in section and others are not?
It is the identical framing member just copied over. I don't see any difference in the properties of the two joists.

Any chance some of the joists are not being cut in section?

no. they are being cut.
it's strange, if i select a non-yellow one in plan and click "create similar" the newly created on is yellow.

this is not critical, but it would be nice to know why this is happening.

Maybe the material is an "instance" parameter rather than a "type" parameter? Check the material of the ones that are gray versus ones that are yellow?

did you check the materials of each joist? Just a thought...

materials are not an option with this family.
i've stripped it out of my project and posted it in it's own project (attached). It's a small nuisance but i can't figure it out.

Materials may not be an "option", but the elements still have one assigned. I don't see any oddities in the example you posted.

Hi irusun,
the oddity is in section; why is one yellow and the other one not?

It seems to be controlled by the proximity of the joist to the edge of the floor (in plan). if i move the joist end (in plan) away from the floor edge, the joist turns yellow in section, but if it's close to the edge it is not yellow anymore.

again, this is really a minuscule item but it fed my curiosity for awhile.

Hmm, they're all yellow when I load up your example file. I tried copying one and it was still yellow. I don't see any gray ones. Sorry I can't be of more help.
