Toggling Links Display

OK,
I know you can load and unload Links (Xrefs for us ACADers) from the File pulldown, but that is S..L..O..W.
Is there any faster way you guys are able to toggle them on or off (no stinkin' layers so I can't go there)?

Also, is there a way to change the colors of the linked file entities to grey or something?

No, unless you just want to turn the link off in a view, but still have it plot and Yes, in the Visibility Graphics dialog window select the Imported Categories tab and set the layers to Halftone or just place a check in the drawing file name check box under halftone. You could also change the color for layers under Line Style/Projection and Override color or linetype or line weight
