Hi all there,

Here are a few tips to make life easy with OPEN command in AutoCAD.

If you are opening a drawing just for reference purpose,or just trying to copy something from that, it's always good to open it read only. To open a drawing as read only, first select the desired file from the open dialog box; just click on the drop down arrow beside the 'OPEN' command button and choose 'Open Read Only' option from there. Now the file is opened as read only. No need of worries about accidental modifications.

If you are dealing with hundreds or thousands of drawings in your project, then you find it little difficult to locate specific drawings for you to open(Sometimes you may forget the location as well). There is an easy way to find specific drawing(s). In the OPEN dialog box, in the 'Tools' menu, choose 'Find' and give the search keyword. You can also do wild card search over there. For example, if you need to search all drawings with a part 'EL' in the file name, you can give the keyword as *EL*. It will return all drawings containing a string 'EL' inside the file name.Make sure that the 'Include Subfolders' option button is checked inorder to search in all the project subfolders.

For getting quick access to your frequently used folders, open the folder you wish to access, then in the 'Tools' menu, in 'Add to Favourites' submenu, choose 'Add <FOLDER_NAME> to favorites'. When you open the OPEN dialog box, just click on the 'Favorites' icon in the left side and you will see shortcuts to your favourite locations. Please read this (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=16380) thread for more info on this.

By clicking on 'Search the Web' icon, you can not only open a drawing from a remote location, but also do general web browsing. Just type the desired url(for eg: www.augi.com (http://www.augi.com/)) in the 'Look in' text box. See here (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=36154) a detailed thread on this.

To open different file formats with relevent applications, refer to this (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=35155) thread.

Just OPEN your eyes little wide to see more on OPEN command ;).

Some of the tips have already been discussed before. I am just trying to put everything together.Sorry for the repetition. By the way i am using AutoCAD 2002 on Windows XP(SP2) Platform.

Hope that helps.

Have a nice opening...

:)

Can we toss around a jar and collect you some pennies for a copy of 2007?

Meanwhile you can also consider upgradation of my P-III office PC to P-IV ;) .

That's quite official, but I have very strong P-IV back home.

Please advise me on how to save drawings on R14 format, other than running a script at the end of each project (That's beyond my reach). That's a pre-requisite from my client (Unfortunately they are one of the leading Oil & Gas companies in the world).

That's a great news...!!!. I regret not to have checked the new features. I beleive I can cut down my questions afterwards. Thanks for the cute little piece of info.
