Hello, I'm a new user here and our office is considering transitioning from ACAD to Revit and I'm doing some research to present to my boss. Our local reseller is pretty clueless about Revit and it looks like the folks around here are much more knowledgeable.
My question is this: we currently use FormZ to create models and do walkthroughs and fly-arounds. Is the stock rendering utility in Revit able to do these sorts of things or does the model need to be dropped into Viz (or FormZ?) in order to do more than a static rendering?

The built in Revit renderer can do great stills (interiors and exteriors) but the walkthroughs take way to long rendered(it has a shaded with edges option that works well but its not photo realistic). Many people aren't happy with the accurender package inside revit. The stock materials are not very good, but once you get your own library of materials, backgrounds and lighting techniques you can produce excellent renderings. The plant library is excellent in revit/accurender. RPC support is limited to 2.0 so no rpc cars.

Revit uses accurender as the rendering program and yes you can do walkthroughs, fly-by's and even panoramic views of areas where you or your client use their mouse to rotate 360 degrees and even zoom into anything in that area.

We have both Revit and FormZ in our office. We have only been on Revit for a couple months, but we do all of our general renderings there. If we need to do a really high quality presentation rendering or walkthrough we would still export and go with FormZ, but Revit does pretty good. My opinion is that Revit will do pretty good renderings very quickly and excellent renderings with a whole bunch of work. That's just my opinion after a couple months of Revit. I also am a lot more impressed with Z's modeling than it's rendering anyway...

Is it my imagination, or have we lost the ability to do panoramic renderings in Revit Architecture 2009? It seems after switching from Accurender to MentalRay, the panoramic feature is no longer available...

First, it threw me a bit that you responded to a topic that was exactly 4 years old.....May 5, 2004. :)
Secondly, mental ray in Revit does not have panoramic capabilities in this release. Maybe in a future release it will be considered.

Hey Scott,
Please put my vote in for "strongly consider it". Thank you.

Panoramas are very useful for interior views. I wish Revit 2009 had this ability. I also wish the panoramas were in MOV file format for use with Apple's Quicktime Viewer.
