What is the consensus on opening/upgrading current on-going projects when a new version comes out? In the past, working with projects that have spanned several Revit releases, it seems that quite a few problems can crop up over the life of the project. Is it better to keep 8.1 on my computer and finish up any current projects, maybe the ones in CD's, in 8.1 and only start new projects or projects that are still early in ver. 9? I'd like to hear some preferences of others.

We plan to move forward as soon as out IT department can manage the upgrade. There are many new features from which we wish to benefit.

In the UK we have Planning Permission as our first level of approvals from Local Authorities, if my design is up to this stage I would upgrade the project. After this stage, if it is past Building Regulations and CD's I would most likley stay in the originating version. But, will consider upgrading if it is a small project that is fairly simple - ergo: not likley to have glitches.

I tend to use "Lashers" approach.

With Revit as a BIM software, Consturction Documents are not the end of the line. Wait until after the project has a major deadline, upgrade a copy of the central file, review the results either on screen or print and compare the uprgaded deadline set against the older version deadline set.

I don't think it really matters. After all, eventually we will have to export drawings to autocad.
Then, the dwg's will be saved to lower versions. We Saved-up our Revit 8.1 files soon as we recieved our Revit 9. I guess it's because we don't share our Revit files with other firms or local authorities or anyone else, just the dwg files.

We also tend to take an apporach similar to Lashers. All our small job go directly to the new version and with any new jobs. We have one large job that is still on 8.1 partly because of the major change to rooms that would need massive rebuilding work in 9.

We do upgrade smaller project right away. The bigger ones are tested then upgraded if all is OK.
