i haven't been able to find anything in the help files about file size, but I saved off a project that was 25mb in 8.1 and it is now 18mb in R9. That's fairly substantial.

I doubt there is much difference. I think the difference your seeing is windows refreshing its file size to report the true size of the file when saved off. Windows tends to be pretty inaccurate at times at reporting file size.

Is Windows inaccurate to over 25%? I've worked on this file all day, adding another level of walls, doors, windows, etc, and the file size is now 19mb.
did you use the compression feature upon saving the file?? cause that could easily account for the difference in size

When you upgrade it is essentially the same as doing a save as on the file. In the past if files became a little too large I often just did a save as to 'recreate' the file and was always amazed at how much baggage the files must carry around with them. 20-25% was not uncommon on larger files.

...and if you pick Save As... and then Options, you can choose Compact File to shrink the file too
