This has not been a good Revit morning so far.
Tried to access the Revit Support site for help but it keeps crashing my internet explorer....so I'm hoping for help here.

I have installed R9 from the CD. Toward the end of the installation, I get the following installation error message:

Error: The name is too long
"D:\Common\Install\Revit\contentENU\NAImperial.cab
(the D drive is the CD drive with the install disk)

When I select "skip", the installation completes and I get the message:
"1 of 9 content bundles coud not be installed and were skipped"

Btw, I got a similar message when installing from the web.

What's going on??

Hi there!
No problems here (web install). Everything went fine and install finished as usual.

There is a high chance that there is nothing wrong with the installation. The problem most probably lies with windows.

Go to Revit 9 \Program directory and look for a file called CONTENT.RCL.
post it here and I will try to fix it

Also check where you installed your content , i.e. DO you have ALL the templates installed there as well as all the families? this is what it in the NAIImperial.cab file.

(Those who have successfully installed Revit will not have this file BTW)

I have (hopefully) attached the file: content.rcl to this post

I have (hopefully) attached the file: content.rcl to this postYou need to go Manage Attachments and find the file.

Apparently the .rcl extension doesn't work, so I made a zip file

LOL, no problem. We all make mistakes!
I am not sure
could this be messing you up!
familiesImperial=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit Building 9\Imperial Library

not sure but even with the longest path you are at 125chars but it should not be a problem, nor I think there is an issue with that long of content.

wait found your problem you are going over 255 CHARACTERS in your pathing
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit Building 9\Imperial Library\Detail Components\Div 07-Thermal and Moisture Protection\07600-Flashing and Sheet Metal\07645-Preformed Flashings\Wall Flashing-Cap and Receiver-Section.rfa

this is where it is having issues
I had mentioned to them that not necessarily you have ALL Users pristine , if you upgrade etc, Windows does append ALL Users.WINNT etc.

You probably upgraded from Window 2000 on this machine.

to get everything working you can do is two things

If you want you can reroute your content to another directory instead of All Users, since Revit doe s not comply with the XP logo in the file structure , there is no need for you to stick to it.

Choose an alternate path for all the content
you can modify your Revit.ini to point to it
or reinstall

If you want to reinstall
Uninstall first, make sure that you delete the content.rcl file from the Program folder if it exist after uninstall.
Then Install the product. when you get to the page for the Content Directory do not let it default to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Appdata......
rather just select the c:\Revit Content or something of that sort ,

The second option is to monkey with the content.rcl file,
familiesImperial="C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit Building 9\Imperial Library" and just change it to a shorter path.

say C:\REvit TEMP

SO it will be

familiesImperial=C:\REVITTEMP\IMPLIB

when you start revit it will say that it has not installed properly, and it will install all fine.
just copy the content from the TEMP dir to the incomplete dir in your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit Building 9\Imperial Library directory. or you can manually extract the CAB file using winzip or rar and dump the files in the correct folder.

your choice.

hope this helps!

Thanks for your help. It took a couple of tries, though, but it works fine now.

Hi Wollf which method did you use and working? I too is having the same problem as yours.

I uninstalled and cleaned out all directories. Then reinstalled. I tried to install content into "My documents" but still ran into problems with too long a path name. Then I installed it directly into the root directory to shorten the path as much as possible. That worked.
I'm up and running now.

Hope this helps
