Proposed and existing views

Normally, when drawing extensions or additions, I would show existing elevations and also proposed elevations.

This would involve drawing the existing plans and elevations, and then copying them and drawing the new bits on the copies, and then setting up viewports on my paper sheet to show the existing and proposed views.

In Revit, do I have to make two models (existing and proposed) either in the same project, or import/link a file with (say) the existing model drawing?

I'm aware of the Demolish tool, which seems OK for plan views but it does not seem appropriate for elevation views

Check out the phasing tutorials. Using phasing you can create existing and new views in the same model and control what displays in each project phase.

One model does all. Set up your phases first. Build your BIM in the first stage and the nprogressively change it with each stage. I include a demo stage with each construction phase because any demo performed in a phase is visible until the next.

Curious, why would you think the demolish tool would be okay for plans, but not elevations? When you demo a wall in plan, it also demos it in elevation. Same for demo'ing doors, windows, or any other object for that matter.

You use the demolish tool just as you would in construction. If you need to demo the roof, go to an elevation or 3d view, and demo it! You can control what is shown in each Revit view, under view properties.

The Demolish tool looks OK on plan view, but it seemed to fill my elevations with lots of confusing dashed lines.

This may be OK for depicting to contractors what to remove etc, but our Planners don't need that much detail - they just want a 'now and after' view.

On my first attempt I needed to remove one type of wall with a window, and build a new wall of a different type with a relocated window. The elevation looked really busy with lines.

I took the easy option and duplicated the model for the existing views :oops:

I am just learning Revit, and it looks like the Phasing section is near the end of the tutorial - I have not got to it yet!

I am still wrestling with the concept of one model for all this information though.

Have a look at phase filters, they are very powerful, and will allow you to show lot's a variations of phase displays, including the one you are after, "show existing plus new" If you still have a few wayward lines on your elevation, use the join geometry tool to clean them up, or if all else fails the linework tool.
