R8.1 and RS2

My structural engineer told me today that he tried opening one of our central project files, saved in our version 8.1, in his Revit Structures 2, and it said the file had to be manually upgraded and would not do anything. Any idea why this might happen? He opened an earlier version of the same file less than 2 weeks ago and it was fine, and nothing has changed as far as I know.

I tried sending the file again, and when my engineer tried to open it in RS2 it generated an error saying "An attempt was made to open the file past its end" or something like that. Anyone know?

*edit* Is the engineer supposed to be opening my central file, or is he supposed to be merely linking my file into his own Structure file?

Maybe the file has a corruption. What about the most recent backup file? Can he open that in RS2?
