Okay, I have a CAD greenhorn (well, he's had several years of cad, but all in a pre-2004 educational environment), and he doesn't do well looking things up on the internet. I need a book - dead trees - that will explain in fairly simple language most of the functions and how to use them. Tutorials. Examples. That kind of stuff. I don't have the time to look it up for him, or I would learn it and then show him how to do these things.
Is there are really good book out there for getting someone with cad experience up to date on all the new features (dynamic blocks, CUI, shortcuts, etc)?

There are several good books out there. My personal favorite has always been the AutoCAD Bible by Ellen Finkelstein (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471788864/ref=pd_lpo_k2a_1_txt/102-2691035-5032119?%5Fencoding=UTF8).
AutoCAD: No Experience Required by David Frey (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0782144144/ref=pd_lpo_k2a_3_img/102-2691035-5032119?%5Fencoding=UTF8) is also highly regarded but I haven't personally read it.

I go with the "Mastering AutoCAD" by George Omura but I've heard that the books by Ellen Finklestein And Ralph Grabowski's are good as well. That being said I only buy every when we upgrade and therefor skipped 2k6 because the office wasn't using it.

Thanks. I' have Finkelstein's book on 2005, and it was fairly decent.
One of the issues I have with most of the books out there is that they all start from the beginning. I suppose that is good, and it makes for nice filler to give the book the proper heft for a $40 pricetag. The down side is that the books are fairly shallow, and fail to go into much detail on the more advanced topics.
BTW - don't take that price thing the wrong way. I just bought a $700 book on concrete. The better the info, the happier I am.

Hi Jordan
Please note I have *moved* this thread from the CAD Mgmt. General (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=119) forum to this one, as I feel this particular forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.
Thanks, Mike

Hi
Try plugging the following search criteria into the forum search (http://forums.augi.com/search.php?) facility ( hint - limit your search to this forum ie "Training (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35)" )...
Key Word(s): *Book*

Thanks, Mike. In this case, I did. About 10 hits from the past 2 years, one or two barely relevent. Tried an overall search, but of the first page, 90% of the links are to CWC ;-) Then I gave up and just posted the question.

Funny, I get 24 results from search criteria *Book* when I limit my search (http://forums.augi.com/search.php?) to the Training (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35) forum.
Plus, you could try the following search criteria...
Key Word(s): *Book* + 2006
54 results from a search (http://forums.augi.com/search.php?) of all the forums.
Have a good one, Mike

How 'bout some of the AU handouts here at AUGI? (http://www.augi.com/education/auhandouts.asp?page=726)
I've learned bunches from them.
Even better if you have access to the more recent ones.

I would agree with Augi Doggie - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471788864/ref=pd_lpo_k2a_1_txt/102-2691035-5032119?%5Fencoding=UTF8

FWIW, I have both Ellen's and George's books for Acad2005. I think I liked George's book beter, but its been a while since I've read through them. Lots of wasted pages for my purpose, but that's how you sell books.
I've ordered Omura's 2006 book and mr FedEx will have it to my office today, thanks to Amazon Prime. Thanks for the links (though the 2007 books are not available...just thought you'd like to know).
Birdy - good idea checking out the AU handouts, but since I'm looking mainly for 2006 features (and changes to 2005 features), the handouts on AUGI won't get me there.
Oh- a big thanks to everyone at CadCamp B'more...it was a great show. It's part of what's prompting me trying to get more in depth. I'd say I wish we'd had three days for it (like AU), but somehow we've managed to fall about 3 days further behind at the office after missing only one day for training. To be honest, we've already saved about a man-hour with one of the tips we've used - too bad we've wasted about four bumping into blind walls where we didn't have good documentation of others (not CadCamp's fault - back in my day software companies shipped comprehensive manuals).

2K7 books should be "available in 4-6 week" so I'm told. (but we'll wait and see)
It doesn't make sense to me that the books couldn't be made available a little closer to the release of the product. Those guys must have access to Beta testing, one would think.
