Can anyone suggest a reason why the 2d toilet (the one that is supplied with Revit) will not rotate.

Its a wall based object. It will only attach to a wall and cannot rotate independently.

Thanks for the explanation. I still wonder though why something that is 2d would be wall based. It really does reduce its functionality. You cannot set it paralell to a side wall when the wall behind it is at an angle or move it away from the wall. Is there any way to tell how a component object is "based", other than how it behaves?

Dont you allways need a plumbing wall behind a toilet? I think thats why it was wall based.

Changing how something is "based" (ie: wall, ceiling, roof) is a simple matter of using the correct template. With this plumbing fixture to change it to be non-wall based, open the family as well as starting a new family for plumbing fixture (not wall based) and then simply select everything in the wall based family and paste aligned into the new family. And there you go.

Thank You Mr. Spot! I now am the proud owner of a floor based 2d toilet. Never in my wildest dreams, etc....
