Is there a way to change a roof once you have made it from a mass...other than changing the mass....which i already deleted by the way :).

In RB9, when selecting a face, the roof shape handles will appear allowing the side surfaces to be dragged. Shape handles are available for all side surfaces that are not horizontal. these extension will remain in effect after a remake.
In RB 8.1, you could remake any hosted familes when the mass changed. Not if the mass has been deleted of course.

We have had canopies that the soffit was covered in differing materials and this is how we handled it. We created the canopy mass and placed it into an Option set. We then duplicated the option set containing the canopy mass. In the duplicated option we cut the mass into the pieces that would be covered in one material. We then made a "roof by face" for that portion of the soffit. We then copied that soffit to the clipboard and placed into the main model. Repeat for other areas and materials. This creates a multiple surfaced roof made from the original single mass object.

I like to keep all original masses on different subcategories for future reference. If I want to make a modification, I create a new subcategory, then copy the original mass and assign its category,an edit it as necessary. The technique using option sets is good too.
