Image size limits?

I have a BMP that simply refuses to import. No error message, no crash, just no image. It is a 2,401KB BMP (from a 233KB PNG!) that just won't behave. Is there a size limit on BMP files?. I did save it as a JPG and it worked, but JPG being lossy it can sometimes be hard to discern finer detail.
Oh, what I would give for PNG in Revit.
