Objects disappear after UNION command

When attempting to UNION 4 separate overlapping complex profiles that have been extruded along a path, the objects disappear after what appears to be the completion of the UNION command. This doesn't happen with simpler objects. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution to the problem?
