We have HP Designjet 500 with standard 16MB memory and I was thinking of upgrading the memory by putting another 128MB.
I have a quotaion from one of the reseller that it will cost A$645 for 128MB which is...bul@#$%^&!
Description of the memory says "128MB DIMM (Dual inline memory module)"
Would I be able to use normal DIMM memories instead HP branded ones?
and also would upgrading memory help speeding up spooling of the plotting jobs?

Thanks.

Young.

Would I be able to use normal DIMM memories instead HP branded ones?Your reseller is talking total rubbish... as long as you purchase the correct type of memory, it does not matter which brand name you decide to buy ( though some brands may be better than others ).

and also would upgrading memory help speeding up spooling of the plotting jobs?Should definitely help, as the output device will be able to handle / process more information within its own memory...

You should be able to purchase any DIMM you want and plug it in.

edit: after a quick browse through HP's website (http://h41186.www4.hp.com/country/us/en/forums/tree_display.html?forum_id=10&pageseq=287996), i believe in order to upgrade the memory, you need to have the HP-GL/2 card installed (http://h71016.www7.hp.com/ctoBases.asp?oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=&ProductLineId=503&FamilyId=1384&LowBaseId=7088&LowPrice=$1,288.00&familyviewgroup=2&viewtype=Matrix&Matrix=&DeptID=58) to upgrade the 500 to 160Mb RAM, which could explain the cost the vendor was giving you.
