sweep with circular profile wont align?

I have created a sweep with a circular profile that follows a c path (i am creating a D pull for casework). The sweep is created fine but if i try to align it with a reference plane i dont get any highlighted surfaces. I tried putting reference planes in the sweep path and profile thinking that it would find those, but unfortunately they dont.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Are you doing the handle as a family or in the project? I would do it as a family. Had a quick play, could still improve, but OK for now.
