is it possible to change the ( unrendered ) size of trees. there are some unrendered trees that look fairly decent with foliage but are all one size

Sure can!!

Open the tree family up that you want to edit and First make a new type listing the new dia. then switch to 3d view and select the tree and all the branches and group it. Then switch to floor plan and selected the grouped tree and hide it. Now all you have to do is select all the leftover symbol lines and scale them using the scale tool to the new size you want. Save the family and now you have a new tree type with a symbol that is a different size. You could if you wanted to also scape the tree itself but that may be a little more tricky. I don't know I have never tried it. Hope this helps!
