What version of Acad are you using? If you are using release 2004 or later then you use the tool palettes to do this.
Simply draw a line and assign its layer and linetype, then drag it onto a tool palette and hey presto - every time you use that tool it will now draw a line with the properties you specified.

Pre Acad 2004 I'm pretty sure the only way to do it would be to use something like a lisp (although I'm often wrong). :cheers:
