we have just been give a job from another architects office to complete (client wasnt happy with last arch) his files are in desktop. can i import the desktop geometry and have it show up 3d in revit. he has each floor plan as a seperate file. cani would like to import these to their respective levels in revit. i tried and all i get is a 2d block basically.

if i can import the geometry in 3d successfully what problems am i in for in revit with this.

thanks

We had a similar situation arise recently. We chose to draw native Revit elements using the CAD/Desktop files as backgrounds to trace from. One problem you will encounter with 3D blocks is that you can not cut true sections through them, you can't schedule items, you can't create elevations from them, and so on. If you want to reuse the desktop information you have, you might as well do the project it in desktop or AutoCAD. I can't see too many advantages for bringing it in as a block in Revit and trying to reuse geometry.

Try this:

1) Export the Desktop file to IFC.
2) Import the IFC file into Revit.

All the best -

IFC is pretty good. It can get a little bit weird when things don't match up the categories, but all the basic stuff - walls, doors, windows etc. came through fine. Make suer you're on the latest version of ADT, previous versions are shoddy at best with IFC.
