Disobedient railing

A couple of days ago I created a stair manually drawing in its boundaries and risers. At that time I did not require any railings so I left it out. Now i want to add railings but even though I've selected the stair as its host, the railing still does not seem to obey. Can someone tell me what I can do about this annoying issue? (Revit 8.1 user)

the railing sketch lines must be over the stair. Use an offset in the railing properties to move them away from the stair.

I've also found that if you start by creating a railing which only follows the stair, skipping any extensions at the top and bottom, host it and finish it then go back and edit the sketch to add any extensions or variations to the slope and hosting, it works more predictably.
