View Full Version : Revit Template Sharing

Group;

As all of you know a good set of templates can make a world of difference with Revit.
The Revit templates that come out of the box are lacking much content. I haven't had much time to develop a good set of templates and have just been using the out of box ones with some minor changes.

It would be wonderful if all the Revit users shared their templates with one another.

I know this may be asking too much; but would anyone be willing to share their templates?

I'd be happy to share, but we've found that there are so many company standards embedded in our Template, that it's not really worth much to everyone else. For example, we have all of our typical (uniquely named) sheets built in.

A couple of us in the Minnesota Revit User Group were going to collaborate on a door family , but we quickly found out that, since we do our Opening Schedules differently, we needed different parameters, and thus needed different families.

Dave is spot on.
I consult to a number of Architectural firms and have built a different template for each one. The only common thing among them all is the line weights which adheres to a standard stipulated by our regional councils.

Okay I can understand about the custom sheet numbers, line weights and company title blocks that would be in your template; but there are many other things that can be extracted and transfered from a template. Some people may have custom templates for certain home styles (Mediterranean, Victorian, log cabin, etc.), certain building construction methods (steel, concrete, wood, etc.) or a custom template with a certain font style (which I have). If everyone did share their templates, we could just extract specific content from each one and transfer them to a new template without the custom sheet numbers, line weights and title blocks.

Anyway it was just a thought and I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the replies.

Here is one that we are constantly evolving. Seems we always find information that is missing as we are working on projects, but then we update. So, for what it is worth...

BTW, This was developed for primarily for residential use.

[ok - file was too big to post. I'm willing to expose our top secret stealth template. I think sharing is a great idea to further the cause for all involved. Any suggestions for file exchange of these larger files? Someone's ftp site?]

How big is the file?
You can email it to me and I can upload it to my website.

Thanks for the offer.

This is not our template, but our set of "standard" wall types. We don't put these into a template, rather cut-n-paste them into a project as needed. There are two plan views, one for Coarse, one for Medium. Each wall is constructed to real world dimensions, and has properties for sound transmission ratings. Each will tag with the appropriate information (per our company standard). There are wood stud, metal stud, masonry (CMU), Brick, and many variations woth various materials. Oh, and I uploaded our 8.1 version for those of you who haven't upgraded yet!

Let me know what you think!

(uh oh..too large a file also. We need a large upload location!)

I have an FTP site on my web site.
I never used and don't know how to set it up.
Does anyone know how to setup an FTP site?
I will try to figure it out in the meantime.

We have found that it is too much work to keep more than one template. It is always evolving and we make minor changes on a weekly basis. The goal is to have all the little tweaks in the template so we can focus on modeling. We keep most of the families out of the template except the ones we use on every project. It helps keep the most up to date family loaded in the project if the user has to load the family from the company library.

Okay I finally figured it out and was able to get it to work.
You will need an ftp site viewer like FileZilla, WS_FTP, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, etc. to be able to upload and download files.

Group;

I uploaded my Architxt-Residential-Default template for anyone who is interested in using the Architxt font as your default font. It still needs some tweaking, as I may have missing some fonts; but at least it's a jump start for someone just starting out.

Group;

We have 2 templates to download so far from my FTP site.
I uploaded my Architxt template and someone else uploaded an AA template.
I don't know who contributed the AA template; but it has some nice stuff in it.
I'm sure we can all benefit from sharing our templates with each other.
I hope many more members will contribute to the cause.
Thanks again for sharing.

You can't access my FTP site from my web site, I don't have any links there.
You also can't use windows explorer or internet explorer to see my FTP site.
I'm the only one that can do that for some reason.

Group;

I wanted to thank (AA, HT, TNC, WLC & BLADS) for contributing their templates. I recently had a chance to incorporate all the templates with some other projects I had to create my own Awesome template. The file is pretty big, I will have to play around with all the content and then pick and choose which ones to keep. I recently uploaded it to the FTP site if anyone is interested.

cadkiller
2006-07-16, 09:48 PM
It's in the imperial template folder.

EEB-Residential-Default.rte

The only thing I'm not certain about is when you copy and paste families that have shared parameters and don't have the shared parameter txt file, than you would need to recreate your own to replace them or do we need to upload this txt file with the template?

dhurtubise
2006-07-16, 10:15 PM
You can upload the txt file, but then it will need relink (path). Or you can re-create it.

Can you guys upload your shared parameter txt files for your templates?
I just uploaded mine which only has shared parameters for my title block.

I noticed that several project parameters were added to my template.
I gather that happened from pasting families or schedules from one template to another.
I think I might be missing some shared parameters in my template.

Did any of you guys use any shared parameters in your template besides titleblock parameters?

Hi

I had downloads some previous files (walltypes) and was just checking for new stuff and saw your file. I went to download it and can't seem to find it on the FTP site. Did I miss something (or... maybe because I am past the 30 day trial?).

let me know where the file is and then I can give it a shot again.

thanks,

The FTP site is still active. It must be your FTP site viewer. Try Filezilla it's FREE and won't expire after 30 days.

I really wish that more people would share their files. I learned so much from seeing how others setup their templates and got some really nice legends, families, details, etc..

Been really busy and out of the loop for a while. I just uploaded our template named "archwest 24x36.rte". I made one for 24x36 projects and one for 30x42 projects. they are basically the same except sheet size. I will see about uploading some families later on

I think I have some decent detail content etc. But I am in the process in developing our templates........finally....and slowly! Sad, but true. I will definitly be putting up my stuff as soon as it's organized a little better. I think what you're doing here is great. I know I benefit from others work as I have no other reference. I am a one man shop on the design side anyway, and so when I see how other people do things, it does nothing but help.

This whole file sharing is beyond my limited capabilities. I am interested to see what other people are doing, especially in terms of templates, but I am obviously missing something with Filezilla. I went to a freeware site, downloaded the FTP viewer (Filezilla), opened it up, and typed in all the necessary info:
Address: precisiondraftingllc.com
User: augi@precisiondraftingllc.com
Password: templates
It agree with me all the way until it said "530 authentication failed, sorry".
Please help.

I'm getting the same error as you now. Not sure why this is happening. It's not the first time this has happened to me. It happened on another connection I created.

I can create a new FTP connection and just incorporate the templates folders with the family folders in one connection.

User name: revit@precisiondraftingllc.com (revit@precisiondraftingllc.com)

Edit: I just checked all my connections and none of them work! What is going wrong? I'm not that familiar with FTP sites myself. Does the connection time out after a certain amount of time? I didn't see anything about that on my host provider's web site when I created the connections.

Does anyone have schematic design template they would be willing to share? I am trying to get some heavy SketchUp people to try out Revit and want to sell them on inputting the program with area formulas through an area schedule to show them how it can track areas, and then create color filed plans.

I was hoping to have it setup so it looked more like SketchUp materials and colors when they are working in 3D and the background gradient sky and ground plane with shadows in 2010. I also wanted to dumb down the materials to a minimum and provide annotations, titleblocks and text that look more schematic.

Thanks for any help in advance!

I was able to access the FTP site using FileZilla. The wall styles file was rather impressive. All things I need to do myself, unfortunately can't seem to find the time to do.

No doubt. New to Revit and this is a time saver for sure. Great idea Edward. Two thumbs up.

One question. I'm an ACA user. I'm guessing these templates work in the same way? Since there is so much data in them, would it be a good idea to just save, for instance, Scotts walls template somewhere and just pick the walls I need off it and drag them into my project? Or should I take the time to create a template that I would use as the base for my projects. Or perhaps both! lol I'm lost.

Its similar in concept, but very different to an ACA template. In some ways better, in some ways worse.

You DEFINETELY want a good base for all projects to start from. Then youll end up having library files to pull stuff out of. Unfortunately, Revit doesnt have that nice Navigator that ACA has for selecting a file and grabbing just "blocks" or just "dimensions." It has a button called Transfer Project Standards, that is nowhere near as slick, haha.

But id invest HEAVILY in a nice Revit template. Mine took a 4 month investment, full time, including content creation, fill patterns, styles, view templates, etc. But its worth it, to have it done right.

four months? I have carp to do! lol

So how much do you charge? I'm lazy.

Seriously though. As I get better and want to add, change, whatever, things in my template, that's not a problem is it? I don't have to start from scratch every time, do I?

Also, I want to redesign my title blocks. My are borinig. Anyone have any cool title block concepts they can send me a PDF of? Just for some ideas.

You have to understand, that was for an office that had never used it before, but that i knew going in what each piece of content was supposed to be. So included in that time was an entire array of Doors, with nested panels, and nested frames, windows with nested panels, line based families for repetitious geometry, rebuilding all of the OOTB casework and electrical stuff to function on their drawings, play with lineweights, styles, graphics, symbology, etc.

I would take the OOTB stuff, and do a project. Go in knowing the first one will look like hell. Go through it, and LEARN which stuff from the OOTB ISNT going to work for you (doors...), and then start your template.

its not a problem to add to it, and you dont have to start from scratch every time, but just like ACA, projects only touch the template at Conception. So every project you start before making a change to the template, they wont have,

Guy's, I just want to say a big thank you for all that cool stuff. I'm not one to post on internet forums unless I'm scrounging for help, but I felt I had to take the time to thank everyone who uploaded all those cool templates. It really is appreciated, considering I don't have the brain power to knuckle down and create my own.

Thanks again, guys, and thanks to cadkiller for making all of this possible.

And since we are sharing here I´ll post mine.
Be warned, it still needs some cleaning up.

.Hoping to check out some of the more advanced templates as I am in the process of setting up our office standards

Went to:
http://precisiondraftingllc.com
used search site tool and searched for :ftp since I didn't see the ftp content
search result didn't yield ftp arena though.

I wondered if anybody would send me an example or two of advanced templates via yousendit.com (I must admit, I rarely use ftp sites) to kelly.rio.rio@gmail.com.

As a quick question, how many people customize view templates into their office template? not sure if it is more trouble than its worth to do so or not? ie. maybe a code plan, a few scales of plans for site, architectural etc.

was also thinking of including in a template and/or rvt file:
project coordinates,
shared coordinates *(to be expanded on as needed per project)
customized basic wall types (or put them in a separet rvt file for copying and pasting)
customized material standards (and map all computers in-house to same materials library)
view hierarchy (a way we wish customize our project browser)
custom titleblocks (could put them into a separate rvt file too)
custom annotation tags and text
custom lineweights and hatches

The plan is to create "shopping cart" rvt files for all the stuff we regularly use in a project.
-annotation families
-line based families and detailing objects
-furniture
-casework
-roof shapes
-masses
-railings
-stair types
-plumbing
-standard nested and to repeat bathrooms and kitchen assemblies
-wall types
-floor types
-roof types
-special equipment, etc
(headings of files to reflective of categories revit uses in "transfer project standards")

so that we can copy and paste from office shopping cart files as needed when starting a project and to update them as we move through a project and create new objects. we would then embed all the families in the shopping cart files with matching materials (ie. change one piece of millwork finish material and the whole set changes with it). so far, I have taken what was available off Autodesk Seek and was going to customize it- but I will admit, it feels rather daunting.

Has anybody else successfully done this? Was it worth all the initial start-up pain?
And anything that I will be missing to consider now?

Cheers! (Skoll)

Im pretty sure youll find most people here do all of that in their template. We USED to have a fairly lean template, with a lot of Container Files to pull things in from... Back in the day when Revit would autmoatically start a project on startup. Since it doesnt do that anymore, we have more and more stuff in our template, ready to go. It makes it much faster for the teams, plus... Things can be type marked and ready to use.

View templates (including overrides for linked consultant files), walls, doors, detail components, floors, roofs, annotations, Filters gallore, furniture families, window families, casework, plumbing fixtures, and all toilet accessories are all in there.

Rooms and larger assemblies like that are in Revit Groups saved to file elsewhere.

Hi,

I am working on the essential training program from lynda.com for Revit Architecture 2011. However, this program is made with a US Imperial version of Revit and I have a metric version. The problem is that the templates in these version are not very simular.

So I wonder if someone with an imperial version would be helpful to share there default templates. The files I need is:

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RAC 2011\Imperial Templates\default.rte
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RAC 2011\Imperial Templates\Residetial-default.rte
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RAC 2011\Imperial Templates\Commersial-Default.rte
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RAC 2011\Imperial Templates\Construction-Default.rte

I have tryed to download them from Autodesk's hompage but haven't found anything useful there.

Thank you

Hi there, I know this is an old thread but I'm gonna try anyway! I'm currently working on my own personal template for my own residential work. I logged in to this FTP site (thanks by the way, it's great!) However... I downloaded the revit templates and my Revit says the files are from prior to Revit 8.1 so it can't upgrade them... Is there anything I can do to be able to browse these files?

@alfredpena - I ran into the exact same problem. I'm new to Revit and just started using Revit LT 2013. I downloaded some of the templates from the FTP listed in this thread but wasn't able to open them, getting the same error you noted. I found another thread that noted that it seemed to be an issue with the LT version of Revit. So, I downloaded the trial copy of the full version Revit and was able to open the files (it upgraded the files the first time they were opened like it is suppose to). Once the files were upgraded and open in the trial full version I simply saved them. Once upgraded and saved I was able to open them in my licensed copy of Revit LT. A somewhat annoying workaround but it does work and it allowed me to view the templates others have posted as I try to determine the best way to build my template.

Hi - I'm also a new user of Revit LT. I was wondering if I could get a copy of your template you successfully opened up on your LT. I'm currently dinkering around with developing my new title sheet, and drawing sheets for my typical template for projects, and have been going in circles. I'd be nice to see what some others have come up with.

Thanks!

I haven't posted in a very long time and I see that this thread has a long history but I am hoping that there still are people looking at this and I am driving myself nuts looking for a particular template! Did anybody or does anybody have the template that was used in the AU class back in 2009 (I think). It was for a class called Revit for Conceptual Floor Plans and the number was AB218-1 - Jim Balding ran it and he developed a super awesome way of satisfying the designer in all of us :) I found the pdf on here but nothing else and I was positive that at my last job I down loaded the zip file that had the video and template in it. Not sure so that is why I am asking

Thanks in advance for any help

ftp site is dead, is there any imperial template that someone can share, trying to design a house

Craig_L
2016-05-04, 08:22 AM
There is an out of the box Template that comes with Revit. To be honest, there is little use in sharing a Template as most of them are customised to each discipline and office standard (and country standards).

david_peterson
2016-05-04, 01:12 PM
I'd have to agree with Craig.
Not to mention many templates include a lot of firm specific content.
I might be willing to sell you a copy for a high price, but I wouldn't be handing mine out for free anymore.
Just my 2 cents.
Is there something specific you're looking for in a template?

no office standard, country is US, Florida will use for house designs, just need a template not to start from scratch with families, title blocks, general notes, general details. etc..
