OK - Newbie question here:
Can you manipulate DWG layers in Revit?
I have to find out if Revit can handle old 2D dwg files and if so how?
Any enlightenment would be welcome.

You can import DWG's and even customize the imported line weight settings. Layers can be turned on and off in the visibility dialog. Exploding the dwg to edit it is not recommended.

If you're going to bring in AutoCAD DWG's, here's a few things I STRONGLY recommend:
Use Link - not Import.
Link vs Import is kind of like XRef vs Block. It's much easier to manage your DWGs once they've been brought in if you Link them. It can get hard to find an Imported DWG. Plus if you ever need to update the DWG, you'll have to move it around to the same place.
PURGE the c**p out of the DWG before you Link it. You'll be bringing in all the Line Styles and Text Styles as well as the graphics. In fact, the reason I just jumped onto AUGI now is I'm trying to find a better way to purge Line Patterns from multiple DWGs.
Don't Explode DWGs.
You're much better off to re-trace the linework as Revit lines than to explode a DWG.
