Is there a command or a switch in AutoCAD that disables refedit or prevents users from accessing it as part of a right click menu?

The block editor has the ability to be locked ...

wondering beause of recent events at my company with new (and even some experienced) staff using this ref editor instead of the proper procedures (Block Editor or Open Xref)

Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe XEDIT ?

Type: Integer
Saved in: Drawing
Initial value: 1

Controls whether the current drawing can be edited in-place when being referenced by another drawing.

0 Can’t use in-place reference editing

1 Can use in-place reference editing

that probably wont help with blocks, if you are lucky enough to have all your company lisp files being read out of one location on a network, I would suggest undefining the refedit command in one of the files that are loaded by everyone. We are on 2005, but when ever we do upgrade, I am aware that refedit destroys dynamic blocks. Hopefully we will be reading off the network by then and I can undefine the command.

undefine refedit

should do the trick, place in your startup routines (command "undefine" "refedit")

Of course the more advanced users will get around this by simply typing .refedit but for the average user it will work, there's a better question here though, why disable refedit, it is a very handy tools, I strongly encourage my users to use it, they don't all do so though.

as far as they don't know the REDEFINE command ;).

An AutoCAD command is a lot like a gun. It may be handy to have and use, but if the person does not understand how to ues it properly then it is a dangerous weapon. One that can cause hours of work loss.

That's the problem with universities and Architecture. Limited exposure to CAD and the proper use of its powerful commands.

I have to mention how funny it is to me that you and Max are using that analogy. I'm constantly making the joke around my office that handing some Engineers a full version of AutoCAD can be like handing a monkey a handgun.

haha!

AutoDesk should create a version of AutoCAD for Engineers. Call it Banana version (as opposed to Vanilla version)
