This the way I control the visibility of things such as a trim, there might be other's that other people might suggest.
In the family editor for the door click family types, then click add under parameters on the right hand side, give it a name e.g. Vis - Trim, then under type select Yes/No, then group the parameter under graphics, also make sure you select type or instance depending on your preference, then click OK.
Now for the next part, select the trim in question and click properties, notice that the name you gave to the Yes/No parameter you created is there under graphics, now press the small box on the far right of the name and you enter the associate family parameter dialog box , select the name you gave it and click OK.
Now under family types you will notice that in the graphics section there is a check box with a tick mark in it, this allows you to control the visibility of the trim, simply load the door into your project and leave the check box ticked if you want to see the frame or un-check it if you dont want to see it.
Hope that's what your after and makes sense.
Regards,
Paul.

You can also control visibility of objects by (when you are in the family editor) clicking on the object you want to hide/show go into view properties and then notice on the visibility parameter that is already there that on the far right there is a little blank button, click on it and you can add a parameter there that will allow you to toggle the object on or off. I would send you a screen shot but unfortunately i am in autocad today. :(
Good luck!
