It seems that there is a problem in Revit 9 when copying wall sweeps. I can copy once or twice, but after that it frequently fails to copy, and I have to place a new sweep. Has anyone experienced this?

Not yet, but perhaps in an instances like yours, you could try an array. It helps if editing is required at some point if you use the array and group function, if there is a change to one, they all change.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

Are you changing your view angle when placing the copying the sweeps? Sometimes if you are working in 3d and move the angle that you are viewing your model, the wall sweep will attach to the opposite side of the wall that you are trying to place it on. Double check that the sweeps are not on the back side of your wall.

Yep I copied them in elevation to avoid that. I think it has something to do shortening the sweep to end at the top of the window. I can copy the original one multiple times, but I cannot copy the copies (if that makes sense.)
When I tried an array it did not work (perhaps due to the same conflict that prevented copying)
