View Full Version : Filters "limitation"

Example:

1) I place descriptive text (say Wall Category 1) in the "Mark" box (under Identity Data in the Property Dialoge Box) of certain walls.
2) Then I make a Filter that says "Mark 'does not equal' 'Wall Category 1'.
3) Then I add that filter to my Visibility/Graphics settings and uncheck its visibility.

Nothing happens.

However if I:
1) Do the same as #1 above.
2) Make a filter that say "Mark 'does not contain' 'Wall Category 1.'
3) Do the same as #3 above...

All the walls except those whose Mark equals "Wall Category 1" turn off, which was my objective.

However, as you can imagine, there are instances where I might want the filter to operate as a "does not contain" condition.

I think that the "equals" filter is for numeric information... this would seem consistent with how formulas seem to work. Following that same logic then I'd guess that the "contains" is for textual information.

Thanks Greg,

Actually, what I'm finding out is the the walls that I don't want to show up can have either text OR numerical, but for the "DOES NOT EQUAL" to work, it must have something.

That is, if the wall has something (alpha or numerical) the "DOES NOT EQUAL" Filter operates on it. If the wall's "Mark" is left blank, then the "DOES NOT EQUAL" Filter does not work on it.

However, the "DOES NOT CONTAIN" Filter works either way.

Text-wise, one can also have cases of "DOES NOT EQUAL."

The upshot is that, to use the "DOES NOT EQUAL" Filter, I must go back and input a "Mark" label into EVERY SINGLE wall that I'm NOT interested in.

Therefore, to me, this is a limitation.

I'm with you now... I think I had the same issue come to think of it when I was setting up a Fire Rating filter... I just didn't go into figuring it out like you did. Thanks for the information... good to know.
