array groups

I have a structural beam that i have arrayed (I know that i could use a beam system, but here me out). If i try to edit the array group, and say stretch a beam, after i finish the group, the arrayed members dont stay in the original position, and are created about 50' away from the original position.

Does anyone know why this happens? I would think that you could edit something in the array group and the group would still stay in the original place. Is it because of the structural member?

Have you flipped or mirrored the group? Rotated it?

Nope. Just editted the group, extended a member, and finished the group.

I have since abandoned the groups and gone with beam systems, but wodl still like to know what is goign on.
