I just thought I would post this as a tip.
The 'show hidden lines' tool is not availiable in structural views, because hidden lines already show in structural views....with the exception of placing a details component or a filled region in front of something. Then your element is now hidden.
If you change the view to an architectural view, then use the tool, you can get your element to show as hidden lines through your filled region or opaque detail component, then just change the view back to structutral and it will retain the hidden lines.
This has just come in handy as I was a little confused at first when placing detail components and having this tool disabled in this view type. Hope it helps:)
