Making Hatch

I am trying to go about making hatch for stone and cedar shingles(not roof but for on the house) and am having some problems, I was able to make a board and batten one but it is only horizontal lines, Does anyone have any helpful hints that would make this process easier?

You might have to play around a bit with the scale but you can use any ACAD hatch pattern that you may have in your library or that you can download.
